Electrical HV Design Manager

  • £750000 - £800000 per annum, Benefits: + £6k Car Allow + Bonus

Design Manager HV / High Voltage Electrical Networks with proven skills in the HV electrical design and construction of electrical High Voltage distribution networks / HV networks, 33kV, 66Kv, and ideally up to 132kV, combined with experience in team leading or managing teams, is required by a prestigious high-voltage electrical design and contracting business with offices in Wakefield and Stockton upon Tees and primarily supporting electrical distribution operators in the North East and Lincolnshire.
 
This hybrid role and can be based from either Wakefield or Stockton upon Tees three days per week. Salary Circa £75-80k + £6k Car Allow + Bens + Bonus to 15% (Relocation assistance is a possibility)
 
Key skills required as a HV Design Manager would include
 

  • Good working design and construction knowledge of 11kV, 33kV, 66kV ideally through to 132kV (E)HV networks and substations, including switchgear, transformers, underground circuits, earthing and protection.
  • Experience in the team leadership / Line management, mentoring of a design team, current team is around 6 people
  • Minimum of HNC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experienced with electrical engineering design and practices and have a working knowledge of the electricity distribution business and how this interacts with Private networks.
  • Ideally Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartered status.
  • Good team working and communication skills and able to manage a range of internal staff, partners, consultants and contractors.

 
The HV design team has completed a range of projects for Distribution Network Operators, the Independent Connections market, the Multi-Utility housing sector, Renewable Energy, the Water Industry, Health authorities, Government institutions, Education establishments, Pharmaceutical, Chemical, Manufacturing, and Construction industries.
 
The purpose of the role is to manage a small but growing multi-skilled team of design engineers to deliver detailed designs for all workstream areas within the business. You will manage the team through development, mentoring and providing day-to-day support, as and when needed. As Design Manager, you will also provide an enhanced level of support to the Operations team, to ensure all relevant contractual obligations are met. The role you will play
 
Key aspects of the HV Design Manager would include
 

  • Enhance current design procedures and associated processes to reduce company risk and liability via formal design validation, verification and approval prior to and during construction.
  • Control and mitigate design liabilities by implementing robust approval procedures to ensure all designs meet performance parameters and client expectations.
  • Build an operations-based design team to strengthen design capability with regards to resource, training, competence and experience.
  • Develop competencies to allow the client to be appointed as a Principal Designer under CDM regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a suite of company design procedures, standards, specifications, and guidance documents.
  • Management and development of a design framework, for external parties, such as Design Houses.
  • Roadmap design and development, through to implementation of design strategy.
  • Maintain continuity and consistency of design work for all relevant workstreams ensuring that delivery timescales and targets are not affected.
  • Design engineers and technicians are progressively upskilled to meet current and future work programme demands.
  • Evidence that the team are achieving optimised utilisation and are meeting and exceeding customer charter targets.
  • Create a robust quality assurance process for all relevant project, contract or framework designs.
  • Talent profile of all resources maintained, with high growth potential assessed and actively managed.

    Overhead Line Design Engineers

    OHL Line Design Engineer / Overhead Line Design Engineers are required to join a large, world-leading transmission and distribution engineering consultancy, to work on the design of large-scale HV projects across and England and Scotland and who on a mission to enhance UK network capacity and support the transition to net zero by 2050.

    The role is remote across England or Scotland. Salary Circa £60-85k + Bens + Bonus 

    This role will suit Overhead Line Design Engineers from Mid to Senior level from a consultancy or energy / Distribution companies, and will offer great progression and the chance to work on varied and challenging projects. 

    Key skills required for the OHL Design Engineer would include

    • Proven experience in high voltage OHL Line OR Overhead line design or overhead transmission engineering typically (132kV – 400kV) .
    • Proficiency in PLS CADD/ Tower for design outputs
    • Fluent in spoken and written English.
    • Ability to work effectively in a dispersed and remote team using collaboration software like Microsoft Teams.
    • Awareness of Health and Safety impacts on transmission line construction contracts

    Desirable skills for the Overhead Line Design Engineer would include:

    • Experience with CAD design software.
    • Ability to create PLS CADD Models from topographical survey data.

    Key Responsibilities as a OHL Line Engineer

    • Conducted overhead transmission line design studies for high voltage construction and consultancy projects.
    • Develop transmission line models and produce electrical line performance assessments.
    • Create and utilise overhead transmission line support models within transmission design frameworks.
    • Evaluate and quantify transmission line components.
    • Support safety assessments throughout the design process.
    • Integrate innovative solutions into project designs.
    • Ensure compliance with budget and programme requirements.
    • Stay updated with technical quality management procedures and specifications.
